SU Gender is organizing a new event series in collaboration with the Artist Residency Program, Gate 27. Maja Bekan, Nour Shantout and Dominique Hurth, residents of Gate 27, who continue their work in the fields of gender, feminism and migration, will meet with the audience in the event series organized by Gate 27 and SU Gender.

The first session of the event series titled Conversations on Gender and Art will take place on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at 18.30 in Karaköy Minerva Han with Maja Bekan in English. Conversations on Gender and Art I: Maja Bekan is facilitated by Gate 27 Advisory Board member and Sabancı University Faculty member of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Ahu Antmen.

As Gate 27 resident between June 5 and July 16, Maja Bekan investigates the modes of togetherness that are operative today and the role of intimacy as a force for social and political transformation both in the artistic field and in society as a whole. In this context, she will work with a group of people on the notion of collective intimacy during her residency at Gate 27. Bekan aims to conduct research and interviews on strong female figures in Turkey.

Maja Bekan is a performance and visual artist. Bekan’s work explores and questions the mediation and delegation of artwork production. She is interested in a collaborative and social approach to exploring personal histories, truths, economies, and social relations. She works on long-term research-based projects that involve different levels of collaboration, presented to the public in the form of performances, site-specific environments, and video/audio/text-based installations.

Ahu Antmen is a professor of modern and contemporary art at Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Her research is based on issues of modernity, identity and gender in 20th century Turkish art. Besides her teaching, she has worked as art critic for Turkish daily newspapers Cumhuriyet and Radikal.

Gate 27 is an international residency program that aims to facilitate the research and production processes of different practices and to provide a platform for interdisciplinary interaction.
