BA in Cultural Studies - Program Objectives

Culture is a concept we are confronted with on a daily basis in the contemporary  world. Positioned in an interdisciplinary area within the context of fields such as anthropology, literature, media studies and  sociology, The Cultural Studies Program at Sabancı University focuses on the area of culture. The objectives of the Program are to combine theory and practice in order to instill in students a critical perspective, creative thinking and active participation. Graduates of the program can work in the following areas: NGO's, media, film, advertising, public relations, human resources, art, literature, cultural criticism and cultural management.

 

BA in Cultural Studies - Program Outcomes


Common Outcomes of Bachelor's Programs:

  1.    Understand the world, their country, their society, as well as themselves and have awareness of ethical problems, social rights, values and responsibility to the self and to others.
  2.    Understand different disciplines from natural and social sciences to mathematics and art, and develop interdisciplinary approaches in thinking and practice.
  3.    Think critically, follow innovations and developments in science and technology, demonstrate personal and organizational entrepreneurship and engage in life-long learning in various subjects.
  4.    Communicate effectively in Turkish and English by oral, written, graphical and technological means.
  5.    Take individual and team responsibility, function effectively and respectively as an individual and a member or a leader of a team; and have the skills to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.

 
Common Outcomes of Bachelor of Arts Programs in Social Sciences:

  6.    Develop a thorough knowledge of theories, concepts, and research methods in the field and apply them in research design and data analysis.
  7.    Assess the impact of the economic, social, and political environment from a global, national and regional level.
  8.    Know how to access written and visual, primary and secondary sources of information, interpret concepts and data from a variety of sources in developing disciplinary and interdisciplinary analyses.

 

Program Specific Outcomes of Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Studies:

  9.    Demonstrate an understanding of the multiple methodologies and interpret different approaches, concepts, and theoretical legacies in the interdisciplinary field of Cultural Studies.
10.    Identify interconnections of knowledge within and across the disciplines of sociology, anthropology, literature, visual studies, philosophy, and geography.
11.    Cultivate a critical approach to the study of culture, articulating the relations between culture, power, and history; exploring cultural diversity and socio-cultural change at the local, national and global level; and exploring the corresponding demands for rights and social justice.
12.    With the use of appropriate technologies, be able to present advanced oral and written evaluations of developments in the realm of cultural production, consumption, and representation.

MA in Cultural Studies - Program Objectives

The Master’s program in Cultural Studies is designed to enhance dialogue and collaborative research among humanities and social sciences, bringing together scholars in anthropology, literary criticism and sociology. It fosters an open intellectual atmosphere where students and academic staff engage with ongoing debates on critical issues of cultural politics in Turkey and around the world in the era of neo-liberal globalism.

Common Outcomes of all Master’s Programs:

  1.    Develop the ability to use critical, analytical, and reflective thinking and reasoning.
  2.    Reflect on social and ethical responsibilities in his/her professional life.
  3.    Gain experience and confidence in the dissemination of project/research outputs.
  4.    Work responsibly and creatively as an individual or as a member or leader of a team and in multidisciplinary environments.
  5.    Communicate effectively by oral, written, graphical and technological means and have competency in English.
  6.    Independently reach and acquire information, and develop appreciation of the need for continuously learning and updating.

11.    Identify interconnections of knowledge within and across the disciplines of sociology, anthropology, literature, visual studies, philosophy, and geography.
12.    Demonstrate an understanding of the multiple methodologies used in cultural analysis; in particular, ethnographic fieldwork, participant-observation, interviewing, oral history, focus group discussions, textual criticism, and visual analysis.
13.    Cultivate a critical approach to the study of culture, articulating the relations between culture, power, and history; exploring cultural diversity and socio-cultural change at the local, national and global level; and exploring the corresponding demands for rights and social justice.
14.    Be able to conduct original research and develop sound analysis of phenomena in the realm of cultural production, consumption, and representation; develop and present advanced oral and written evaluations of one's research and arguments.
