Open University / Leverhulme Trust Research Project: Performing memory in the 'new' South Africa
Applications are invited for a three-year full-time PhD studentship,

funded by the Leverhulme Trust, to be based in the Ferguson Centre for African & Asian Studies, Open University, associated with a parallel PhD studentship in the Department of Theatre & Performance Studies at the University of Warwick (advertised separately).
Applicants should have a commitment to pursuing research to doctoral level, focusing on a specific aspect of the overall project. This aims to explore how South Africa is redefining identities in the 'post-apartheid' era through a variety of performative practices, including oral and written narratives, exhibitions, installations and memorials. The main emphasis of the Open University studentship is expected to be on the role of personal and collective memories in the theatre, broadly defined.

The studentship will be based at the Open University, Milton Keynes.
It is expected that the candidate will work alongside the associated
PhD candidate supervised at Warwick University.

Applicants should be holders of a good first degree in English, Drama or a related subject, with relevant MA studies completed or close to completion.

The studentship will pay all tuition fees (at UK/EU rates) and will
provide a maintenance grant equivalent to current UK Research Council rate for research students based outside London (currently £13,290 for the first year). The cost of a research visit to South Africa during the three-year period is also included.

Potential applicants should review the further particulars for the
studentship, including the outline of the larger project, which are
available at
